Anyone Can Balance On Their Head
Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.~Psalm 37:4 NIV
Lately I’ve been busily and happily engaging deeper in an important exercise–no, not balancing on my head, but balancing on my heart! It may sound hard physically, but mentally anyone can balance on their head! All you have to do is look at the sometimes cold, hard truth of life and make a decision based on what lines up with the natural facts and figures and the status quo of the world’s definition of success. There, you’ve done it–balanced your life based on your head. But even though it may seem you’re standing straight and strong, often times we find ourselves growing weary and trembling at the thought of holding that position that we or our circumstances or other people have put us in any longer–but all we are taking into account is what our head is telling us.
But what else is there to seriously consider? The numbers in my bank account, the whispers of my co-workers, family or friends, the odds of making it, or whatever else we’re considering in the natural world just doesn’t seem to show that I can be, do or have anything different and be truly successful at it. However, we often forget that our God is not a God of the “natural”, but of the “supernatural.” And yes we are citizens of this earth with often limited access to earthly resources and knowledge, “but our citizenship is in heaven” according to Phil 3:20. And just as we have certain rights here on earth, we have certain promises from our Father in heaven–those that truly can’t be taken away from us!
We’ve just recently celebrated our freedom in this country with the 4th of July holiday. But have you yet been able to celebrate your freedom as a heavenly citizen?–having truly embraced and empowered yourself FULLY with ALL that your Creator meant for you since, after all, Jesus came so that you “may have life, and have it to the full”? (Jn 10:10), and so that “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds” (Phil 4:7), and so that glory is given “to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.” (Eph 3:20-21) Have you begun to see more than you can ask or imagine in your life?
I once thought that not possible, but now I know that I was just balancing on my head–anyone can do that. But a child of God can do more–so much more! How? Well….bottom line… “He must increase, but I must decrease.” (Jn 3:30 NKJV) The more I nestle myself in the Spirit, submit myself before God, and sit and learn at the feet of Jesus, and balance on my heart–the more I have seen God bring things into my life that I never could have asked or imagined or even done myself–I was “not competent”, “not ready”; it was “not probable”, “not typical”–maybe they should just be dismissed as fantasy! Changes in me and my family, new opportunities to achieve dreams I thought I would have had to fight for in the flesh, in the natural–all resulting in increase in joy, peace and fulfillment. Sure, there are trials and challenges, but as I intentionally allow Him to increase and myself to decrease, His fruit in my life increases–and, oh, how sweet!
I have two birthdays still to come this year–my natural birthday this week and my spiritual birthday on Ocotber 4–the one with most significance. And I am so thankful to be alive and be on the path of becoming and fulfilling my unique God-given calling in all areas of life! With every birthday celebration of my own, I just can’t help but celebrate the birthday of Jesus!
Yes, balancing on your heart and the desires that God has put in them–ahhh, that is the true Olympic challenge–beginning and ending with an eternal flame of joy, peace and fulfillment that starts burning brightly in this life and then blazes for all eternity–an event in which any of us can win gold! But have you even considered going to the trials? Guess what, you can try out and qualify and go on to win the gold in all of the events God has designed you for–even if you haven’t worked out the proper life muscles in ages! The big question is are you willing to discipline yourself to enter the arena with your faith and actions working together so that your faith is made complete by what you do? (James 2:22)
Do you truly believe that you can and will become, receive and fulfill the pure desires of your heart–not just what the often learned and assimilated thoughts of your head tell you? Then with that belief and faith, you must have a clear God-given, God-sized vision of where you want to be and how you can get there. And then for that vision to come to pass, you must have a plan grounded and carried forward in God’s wisdom, will, guidance and power.
Or maybe you have been so busy trying to hold that position on your head that you have not even given any specific thought or attention to what your heart and God’s Spirit is telling you is your Blueprint for Life. If not, how will you ever know what you were meant to build into your life or into the lives of others or how to build it based on how your Creator has designed your being and your life purpose? Yes, you have a life purpose….in fact, many life purposes for each area of your life–Spiritual, Relationships, Physical, Finances and Career. Do you know them? Are you fulfilling them?
So to play with the metaphor some more–what does it look like to balance on your heart? Well, it’s certainly not an upside down, upright position like balancing on your head. The only way to balance on your heart, which is at the core of your being in your chest, is to lay down–that is to lay your life down at the cross, at the feet of your Savior so that you can learn from Him and let Him carry your burdens. What a comforting thought, huh? Which Olympic event would you want to compete in–trying for the longest time balancing on your head or balancing on your heart in a resting position while God carries you through?! God’s training program is the surest way to gold–because it is based on how the event of our lives was truly meant to be carried out and the only person we have to compete with is ourselves and the time and track we were originally designed for.
And if you delight yourself in the Lord, He truly will begin to give you the desires of your heart as promised in Psalm 37:4 and you can bet your bottom dollar–and mine, “being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Phil 1:6)
